Due to the ongoing social unrest and continuous days of violence on the streets of Colombia, CONMEBOL have come up with the decision that Copa America will not be held in Colombia. There was an appeal by the people and athletes to postpone the tournament to November due to the conflictive and strenuous conditions in the country, the organization confirmed that the competition will played anyways and will be relocated to many fixtures.
Copa America is schedule to begin from the month of June 2021, and as only few weeks are left for the games to begin, the government requested Conmebol to postpone the competiton, but it was rejected.
Ahead of the soccer competition to kickstart soon, Colombia is going through chaos and social discontent along with rising Covid 19 cases in the country. Thus it is not a best time for Colombia to host the event in such turmoil conditions, but the South American soccer governing body is not willing to cancel the contest once again.
Earlier Conmebol have granted Colombia and Argentina the rights to organize the tournament in the year 2020, however due to the covid 19 pandemic, the event got postponed. Now it has been decided by the governing body to relocate the fixtures. Colombian government are hopeful that the situation in the country would get back to normal, but the conditions haven’t changed much and thus many have started thinking that it would be difficult to host such high profile event under chaotic atmosphere.
